A good summary of King Lear but I simply cannot agree with your praise of the performance.

Maybe the accoustics in Aotea didn’t help, maybe the actors were feeling a bit jaded after so many marathons, maybe hundreds of adulating silent spectators just don’t fit with what should be a noisy, bawdy, riotous play but for me it just din’t click. It felt more like a pantomime with Cosaques prancing about, people rushing hither and thither, and the madness scenes just didn’t have the right build up.

Excruciating overplay and overacting.

Seriously, I wonder how hard it must be as an actor to deliver lines that have passed into the language and are now thoroughly clichéd, such as ‘to be or not to be’, or ‘my kingdom for a horse!’
