Jamie's quite right to point out that the govt's digitalfuture blog is hosted in the US. So is this blog, so I can't complain too loudly! Even so, I think it's a bit on the nose for govt to host offshore.

And the reason I host offshore is, quite simply, the risk of a high bill due to low traffic caps. This is made all the more ironic by the fact that the reason often given for data caps is paying for the Southern Cross. This is a New Zealand blog with a mainly NZ audience, but if I host it here I pay by the byte for the Southern Cross cable which I'm not using, and if I host in in the US I don't pay for it even though I'm using it! Depeering drives up local prices further. I've discussed this problem on air before.

But fear of bill shock shouldn't be quite such an issue for a government department as it is for an individual. It would be good to see government putting its money where its mouth is on this one.

I find somewhat ironic that this blog is not hosted in NZ. A excellent case of walk not matching talk.
