doodle.com provides really easy scheduling of meetings, kind of like crowd sourcing: it's a great way of finding the time that everyone can meet without going backwards and forwards normally required.
Perfect for committees, groups etc.

I strongly second Evernote, Dropbox, Gmail, NetNewsWire (or presumably FeedDemon for Windows) and Skype.

I'd add Google Earth, Stellarium for anyone even slightly interested in the night sky, and Twitterific for Mac users.

I guess most of the listeners will be Windows users, so perhaps you need to cater to them.

Is there a decent free antivirus software for Windows? AVG used to do one.

The best browsers are free; Firefox, Chrome, Opera.

OpenOffice is a free alternative to the expensive suite from that other company.

VLC is an excellent video player, handles many different codecs, and available for Windows, Linux, etc.

Or, go the whole hog, have only free software on your computer; Linux! It is a little different, so takes some learning, but a must for anyone serious about computing (even if only on a part time basis) and great for those who want to tinker or learn more about computing.
